Phoenix Hydraulics Hits Top Gear

A Peterborough-based company is providing the power behind a BBC’s Top Gear presenter’s bid to win this year’s 2008 Round Britain Offshore Power Boat Race.

Phoenix Hydraulics, located in Woodston, is supplying £2000 worth of hydraulic products to presenter James May’s race team, who is entering the challenge in the 39 foot ‘Two Scoops’ power boat.

The race takes place on June 21 and May’s team also includes his Top Gear camera man colleague Iain May. The two have joined forces on a number of adrenalin-fuelled adventures over the last five years - including Top Gear’s recent trip to the North Pole. The pair will be joined on-board by TV colleague Nick Knowles from BBC One’s DIY SOS.

Phoenix Hydraulics has provided four custom-made stainless steel hydraulic cylinders to operate the trim tabs on the boat and two hydraulic power units to power them.

The company has a strong presence in the marine industry and supplies many of the top boat builders in the UK including Fairline, Sunseeker, Princess and Oyster.

Commercial director, Fergus Titmarsh, said: “We are delighted to be involved in James’ race team. They needed high quality, robust hydraulics for one of the biggest and toughest power boat races in the world and that’s what we do best.”

Mr Titmarsh continued: “We have secured a unique place in the marine sector by offering an unusual level of expertise - most of the marine market is served by chandlers, who understand the marine industry, but are not engineers or hydraulic engineers so lack the knowledge to apply the hydraulic products with confidence. We are experts in hydraulics, and understand marine applications, and we can make virtually anything.”

Phoenix Hydraulics was established in 1981 and is part of an £18 million group of companies. It supplies high quality, bespoke hydraulic centralised systems, hydraulic trim tabs, hydraulic steering, hydraulic thrusters, hydraulic tender winches, hydraulic door cylinders and mechanisms and hydraulic pasarelle and davit control systems to the marine industry from its base in Peterborough.
